How Is the IS Job Market Thus Far?
It's been a year since I announced ISJobs.xyz, a crowdsourced job post database for IS. I am glad to learned that many have benefited from this tool when they are searching for jobs. My goal is to make it a long-lasting community effort. This year, the torch is passed to Yihong Liu, Kyuyeon (Jenny) Rhee, and Debapratim Ghosh. They have done a fantastic job of maintaining the database!
"So how is the job market so far?" I got this question from one of my colleagues. Luckily we live in the era of generative AI, so after 10 minutes of dumping data into ChatGPT, I come up with this graph.

According to data from ISJobs.xyz (see Figure 1), here's what we know as of the end of August for North America:
- Quantity of Job Postings: The number of job postings in North America is on par with last year's figures, if not slightly higher. (There's a possibility that the 2023 data might be slightly underreported, but I think this is unlikely.)
- Timing: The pace of job post being released is pretty consistent with the one from last year. There are two possibilities: 1) there are more opening this year, or 2) the entire market is moving earlier for about 2 weeks. It could also be a combination of two. Either way, I would expect there should be plenty of new job posts in the coming months!
As for other regions, thanks to the maintainers, ISJobs this year provides more granular region data, including Europe, Africa, Asia, Middle East, and Oceania. It would be fairly easy to analyze the data as you could simply download the entire dataset as a CSV file.
Job market is no doubt a stressful event, and I hope this tool can provide some utilities to job market candidates. The job market can be unpredictable, but this year's data gives us reason for cautious optimism. Keep your eyes open, stay prepared, and good luck with your job search!
P.S. I was hoping to build a public GPT bot so that anyone can quickly conduct analysis using our data, but it seems like ChatGPT's Code Interpreter's sand box does not allow internet connections, thus it's impossible to pull data directly from our source. You would still have to manually download and upload the CSV files to ChatGPT or other tools. For any one who may be interested, this URL will provide an up-to-date CSV file.
